San Carlos Pizza Taste Test 2024

Last night was a no-cook dinner night. We didn't want to go out, and we didn't want to cook. I've been waiting three years for a pizza taste test night, so we did it! There were six of us at home, including three adults and three hungry teen boys, so we decided on three pizzas. Being science-minded, I was inclined to compare apples to apples -- or in this case, pepperoni pizzas to pepperoni pizzas.

We ordered from Marzetti the Pizza God (a food truck in the 420 taqueria location), Pizza Fire, and Jax Snax

From Marzetti's, we ordered an 18 inch New York style pepperoni pizza for 320 pesos (254 sq in, or $1.26 pesos per square inch of pizza -- I told you this was scientific). This was the largest pizza and the sauciest pizza, with a tangy sauce and a thin, seasoned crust. This location also offers Detroit style and Chicago deep-dish style pizzas, which we didn't try. This location offers a phone number for English-speakers to place their order, which I appreciated, as someone who doesn't speak Spanish very well (yet)! This pizza took the longest from order to delivery, at least 10 minutes longer than predicted when we placed our order.

From Pizza Fire, we ordered a 16 inch pepperoni pizza for 250 pesos (201 sq in, or $1.24 pesos per square inch of pizza). This was almost like a pre-made crust, with a tangy cheese blend and tangy crust. I found it flavorful, but just OK texture-wise. This pizza also came with a bag of red salsa. Overall, this was tied with Marzetti's for second place. I appreciated that the cashier here spoke English; with my OK Spanish, we were able to communicate well. This pizza was fastest, from order to delivery.

From Jax Snax, we ordered a 14 inch (large) pepperoni pizza for $325 pesos (154 sq in or $2.11 pesos per square inch of pizza). This was the winner for our family. The crust was thicker, there was more cheese, the sauce was tasty, and the pepperoni was thin (equally thin across all three locations). This pizza also came with a variety of sauces -- a ranch, a chipotle, and a red salsa. The cashiers here were busy and spoke primarily Spanish. with some better able to accommodate my inadequate Spanish than others -- I might have ordered by phone if I were a better Spanish speaker, but I ordered at the counter instead. This pizza took about five minutes longer than predicted, but was 100% worth the wait.

Thank you, Jax Snax, for a delicious pizza experience, and very kind service! Our family will be back!
